Some individuals believe in fate, while others might place more belief in divine intervention, on Venice Beach, in Venice, California in 1965, two men, James Morrison and Ray Manzarek, were in the right place at the right time when it came to the formation of The Doors. Both men were Alumni of UCLA, and were familiar with one another, but it wasn't until Morrison said that he was writing songs, and after singing "Moonlight Drive", Manzarek insinuated that they start collaborating.
By August, the band was brought together and their first six-song demo was finished by September of the same year. They were talented, and started playing at Los Angeles' prestigious Whiskey A-Go-Go on the Sunset Strip, where they were spotted by Jac Holzman, President of Elektra Records. Holzman signed the band to his label on August 18th, less than a year after their debut track was recorded.
From August 24th through 31st The Doors went directly into the studio and recorded their debut album, and it was released in stores in January of 1967. The album featured favorites like "Break on Through (To the Other Side)" and "Light My Fire" which was the band's first single, and Elektra's first song to reach the first ranking on Billboard's Hot 100. In the era of vinyl records, they had multiple TV appearances and were a hit from the very beginning, growing into hot commodities.
On December 9th, 1967, Jim Morrison became known for becoming the first artist to ever be taken into custody while on stage, during a performance at the New Haven Arena in New haven Connecticut. Morrison, who was busy with a female fan backstage, was approached by a police officer who was stationed at the show. The officer, who had threatened to mace the two of them, followed up on his threat and sprayed them when, after he asked them to break it up, Morrison spoke up. Causing a riot to break out, Morrison went on an over-the-top rant halfway through the set, verbally bashing the New Haven Police Department, and was dragged off-stage. The event had already gone down in history, even though the charges were dropped, and now Morrison was a living legend.
The group played on in infamy, and Morrison continued to indulge his rebellious image, becoming consistently confrontational with authorities during gigs and indulging in drunken binges, nearly breaking the group up on many occasions. Morrison was uncovered deceased in a bathtub in an apartment in Paris, France on July 3rd, 1971, at age 27. Although it is presumed that he died of a heroin overdose, no autopsy was administered because his death did not seem to be a result of foul play.
The group continued to perform and record together until 1973, but it was not the same after Morrison's death. Doors vinyl is still a popular item to this day although they only recorded nine albums, The Doors will forever have a spot in rock and roll history.
