Throughout our lives there will be songs that stir an emotion within us. You may even remember the song your mother sang to you when she tucked you in at night when you were still just a baby. Or maybe your first music memory was a nursery rhyme that you first learned as a toddler.
Music can stir emotions deep within us. Bring back fond memories, or even bad ones. Movie makers have always known how music could enhance our emotions. The scary part of a movie will have scary music, the love scene will have soft music, the chase scene will have adventure type of music. It's kind of like adding a seasoning to a food, with the right seasoning, you bring out the flavor, with the right music, you bring out the proper emotions.
Songs could make me feel like dancing. There was just something about certain beats that made you want to move. Could be a simple movement like the bobbing of your head, or tapping of your feet to more complex movements like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Some beats even seem to dictate the type of music. A salsa will make you want to move one way, while a hard rock song will make you want to move another.
Is there a song that brings back a childhood memory in you? How about a song that brings back the memory of a love, or a lost love? Do you remember the music that played at your prom? Maybe you and a special someone have a song that you share. Couples often do have a song they consider their song, usually the music that was playing when they had their first kiss, or first dance.
Proof in music's power is on the road. Just watch people singing to the tune on the radio or CD playing in their car. They will often suddenly have an imaginary drum set on their dashboard. Heads are bobbing, and hands are tapping on the steering wheel.
There is no doubt that music is directly connected to our emotions. No wonder people will idealize musical artist. Treating them like royalty. That particular artist has learned how to tap something deep inside you.
Sometimes we use music to heighten the mood we are in. Maybe you just broke up so you want to hear 'crying in the your beer' type songs, or the blues. Maybe you just won something, or accomplished something difficult and want to hear a song that is inspirational. I know I love to hear "I Can See Clearly Now The Rain Has Gone" when I need inspiration, or need to be picked up. We use music to help us change our mood too. We are sad, but want to feel happy. Music can help us do that.
Religions also uses music to instill awe, faith and inspiration. Countries use music to help you feel patriotic. Marching bands will use music to stir up team spirit. Many leaders have recognized the power of music. Lovers will use music to seduce you. Nightclubs will use music to make you dance, and get thirsty. Companies will use music to brand their product, and help you remember it. For instance, soft drink companies in particular have been very successful at that. Do you have a favorite soft drink songs, or maybe a company jingle that you have found catchy?
Music is somehow linked to our emotions in ways we can not even describe. Even now, as I write this article I have some of my favorite songs loaded into a play list and listen as I type. Yes, it is true, nothing quite affects the emotions like music.
