The Kills - Blood Pressures

Blood Pressures has quickly become one of my new favorite albums. Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince the rock duo known as The Kills, and what they bring with this album is an essence that is rare to find in music these days; blues-rock, raw energy, beautiful lyrics and pure talent. You may recognize Mosshart's name and amazing voice from her work with The Dead Weather, along side Jack White (The White Stripes). It's impossible to deny Mosshart's talent as a singer/songwriter when listening to this album. Although a cliche, the exact description I give her voice is strong, dark, and incredibly sexy.
Hince is true talent himself. Although The Kills are generally a simplistic band, it is still easy to recognize his abilities as a blues guitar player and vocalist. When listening to Blood Pressures for the first time I could tell Mosshart's voice and Hince's guitar were made to be in the same room together. For me this became obvious when I heard "Heart is a Beating Drum" for the first time. The growl of the guitar sang right along with Alison (as well did Jamie), and every word was sang with sincerity. That is something I don't hear much these days.
I'm a big fan of the lo-fi rock style of The Kills. There are a lot of bands out there that try to be "simple and raw" and honestly they sound exactly that, simple and raw. Simple as in there is nothing to their sound, just plain as shit, and raw as in their talents haven't been refined and it might as well be a monkey throwing it's own shit at an out of tune guitar. "Future Starts To Flow", the first track on Blood Pressures, is a perfect example of what I enjoy most from The Kills. It's simple in the sense that they don't go overboard with their talent, and raw in the sense that their music is bare and exposed.
I fucking love the song "Pots and Pans". The lyrics, the quality of the recording, the melody, the distorted guitar solo, Alison's chant at the end of the song. This song belonged in Black Snake Moan, it belongs on every break-up mixtape, and it belongs in your ear canals. I get very passionate about songs that strike me in the way this song got me. I was lying on my couch listening to the album and when this song came on I sat upright and grabbed the liner notes to find out exactly what I was hearing. For me "Pots and Pans" wraps up everything I love about this album and delivers it to your door. Energy, raw, grit, love, hate, beauty, and life.
