Is Recording in Your Own Home a Pipedream?

Producing killer Home Recordings - Is It Still a Pipedream?
Up until just a few years ago I would say yes. When I first started I had all kinds of trouble like delay problems and driver problems. But now with the high powered computers we have available you can produce quality recordings right in your own home.
I would like to give you a few simple steps toward having the right gear-
1 The Right Computer- I would suggest at least a dual core with 1 gigabite of ram. (2 gigs is even better). I would also suggest at least one hundred and twenty gigs of memory.
2 A Good Sound Card- You won't have success with the card in most computers designed for home use. Aftermarket cards such as those made by M Audio or Audigy are what you want. Usually the midi cables come with the cards, if not you need to buy them.
3 A mixer- This is needed to send your vocal or instrument into the computer.
4 Monitors- Don't go with cheap stereo speaker from you home system. Bye some decent powered monitors. You need these to hear how well your mix is working out.
5 Microphones- A Condenser for vocals and acoustic instruments and a Dynamic for amplified instruments.
6 A recording program- The computer software available now is mind boggling. Most have all the effects like EQ, Compression, Fade Ins, Fade Outs, built right into the program. Some like garage band for Mac are free, and most IBM types are very inexpensive or even free like Audacity and Power Tracks.
There you have it, you don't need tons of recording gear, in fact you should be able to set your studio up for under a thousand bucks.
Examples for people who do it this way-
Barbara Streisand - records in her own home
Cowboy Junkies - recorded the debut album in a church
Now one more thing you need is the information on how to do it. This makes all the difference in the world. Pros spend many years studying this artform. Your could dig around for years like I did in forums and reading articles but there is an easier way. Take a course from someone who has done it for years and has put it all down on paper. Please come and visit our website for some great articles, reviews and more great tips.
