How To Draw Angels

Angels have been a favorite subject of artists for centuries. They are messengers of God and found in many spiritual traditions. If you want to learn how to create drawings of angels start by studying the works of other artists and see which ones you are drawn to.
Consider the type of angel you are going to draw. An archangel or warrior angel is often portrayed as a fighter and defender. Imagine drawing this angel with the bold wings of a bird of prey. Guardian and messenger angels might appear more ethereal with softer wings, like those of a sparrow, and are dressed in flowing robes. A fallen angel might look more menacing with bat wings. A cherub usually has very small wings on a small child's body. These are just few ideas to get you started.
Begin by drawing a human figure for your angel. Then add wings to your figure. Get some reference photos of birds that you feel represent the type of angel wings you want in your drawing. Pay attention to the way the feathers overlap. Examine the shapes of the individual feathers. Look at the silhouette of a wing and use that as a guide to sketching the wing. Notice that in most angel drawings the wings normally begin in the middle of the shoulder-blade area. Start by sketching out some simple wings. Practice and get comfortable drawing the basic shape.
The best way to draw wings in your pencil drawings of angels is to look at the anatomy of a bird's wing. Note that the skeletal structure of a wing is similar to a human arm. The wing is compiled of an upper arm (humerus), elbow, the forearm (ulna and radius), a fused wrist and hand bones. The forearm supports the secondary feathers and the primary feathers are supported by the fused wrist and hand bones. There are two bands of covert feathers and multiple bands of lesser coverts. These coverts are at the top of the wing while the primary and secondary are at the bottom.
Knowing the structure of the wing makes drawing it easier. Once you get the hang of drawing the wing try drawing different textures and materials in place of feathers. You'll start to notice creating your angel drawings will become more natural. Your imagination is the key to creating drawings of angels.
