Building A Hip Hop Recording Studio

When searching for the equipment to put together a hip hop recording studio, there is almost an uncountable number of choices. The number one thing for an emcee (or any vocal musician for that matter) to pay attention to when purchasing equipment is the sound quality of that component. To make the best choices, the musician must know about the equipment before going in to buy anything.
The number one thing that musicians must focus on is the microphone. With so many choices, how is an emcee supposed to know which one is the best for their voice in their price range? Well, the best thing to do is ask professionals, or anybody within your music industry, which microphone has worked good for them. Find sites with reviews on microphones. That should help you narrow down your search.
Another equally important part of the hip hop studio when it comes to sound quality is the microphone pre-amp. Many people underestimate how much a pre-amp contributes to the sound quality of a recording. Most established music professional know that you should probably spend more money on the pre-amp instead of the microphone. Same with the microphone, find reviews on pre-amps to help your narrow your choices down.
Another component that has very much to do with sound quality is the audio interface or soundcard. The choice you make with this has to do with your own personal needs. It depends on how many connections you need, the types of connections your computer has, and so on. However, no matter what you need, make sure that the audio interface or soundcard is made for recording music. Some sound cards sound fantastic when playing music back but when it comes to recording, they lack the quality you need.
An important part of the hip hop studio is a good digital audio workstation. You must have a good computer with a decent amount of RAM and processor speed. If it lags on normal everyday tasks, you will definitely need to upgrade. Some companies manufacture computers for studios. However, if you are good with technology, you might want to look into building a computer yourself, or upgrading an existing one. Believe me, it's not as hard as it sounds.
Now that you have the recording chain under control, you have to focus on the part of your studio that many new studios forget about: acoustic treatment. Your studio MUST have good acoustic treatment if you expect to produce quality music. Check out some tutorials online on how to build bass traps on your own or look up some companies that you can buy acoustic treatment from.
I have left out many things that you can add to studios, but to get started, this is the basics to start a future professional studio. You can add more when you start making music and making money from your sales. Some things you will definitely need in the future are: studio monitors, more microphones, dynamic processors, and other little tools that make music more professional. Good luck with building your new hip hop studio.
